LIPOcel vs HIFU: What’s the Difference?

If you’re researching non-surgical treatments for body contouring (fat loss) or skin tightening, you’ve likely come across two advanced technologies: LIPOcel Body Sculpting and HIFU Skin Tightening. While both use High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) energy, their purpose, treatment depth, and ideal candidates differ significantly.

At Elite Body Contouring, we offer BOTH technologies, not because one is “better” than the other, but to ensure every client receives the best solution possible, tailored to their specific needs — whether that’s stubborn fat reduction or improving skin laxity or both.

Understanding the Technologies

LIPOcel Body Sculpting is a TGA-certified treatment designed for non-surgical fat reduction and skin tightening. It was the first aesthetic device of its type created globally in the aesthetics industry. We are fortunate to have been Australia’s first non-surgical body contouring clinic to access this groundbreaking technology.

LIPOcel uses advanced high-intensity focused ultrasound to heat, especially the subcutaneous fat layers of the body at depths of between 8mm and 13mm. This heat energy triggers fat cell destruction (lipolysis) to sculpt and shape the body. Due to its precision targeting in reaching the subcutaneous tissue, no other tissue is damaged during the process.

Unlike traditional HIFU devices that may be used for fat reduction on the body, LIPOcel not only provides a stronger method of non-surgical fat reduction, it also stimulates collagen and elastin simultaneously, resulting in a skin-tightening benefit, making it a true 2-in-1 treatment delivering visible results for permanent fat reduction and skin tightening.

What makes LIPOcel unique from traditional HIFU devices is its patented contact cooling technology, which keeps the skin surface at a comfortable temperature for the client while allowing higher energy output (up to 150 joules per shot!). LIPOcel isn’t just a branded version of traditional HIFU, it’s a completely new and innovative technology that reaches depths that standard HIFU devices just can’t

When comparing the engineering of the LIPOcel device to standard HIFU devices it’s clear the machine is much larger, this houses a sophisticated chiller mechanism which is used to maintain a consistent high delivery of energy safely via the patented contact cooling handpiece – basically due to the strength of the energy emitted, it’s been a developed to ensure client safety in a controlled way.

LIPOcel is intended exclusively for body treatments, so it can deliver more power than standard HIFU devices that are mainly designed for use on delicate facial tissue.

So how does HIFU compare?

HIFU Skin Tightening, by contrast, is a skin-rejuvenation treatment used to lift and firm crepey, stretched, or sagging skin. It targets the superficial dermis, epidermis and SMAS layer (1.5mm to 4.5mm depth) to stimulate collagen and elastin production. HIFU  is best suited for clients experiencing skin laxity from aging, pregnancy, or weight loss, especially where fat loss is not the primary concern. While we perform many HIFU treatments on the body for skin tightening results, we are limited in achieving the level of fat reduction that can be treated with LIPOcel.

Key Benefits of LIPOcel

  • Designed for the Body Only: Due to the strength of the technology, LIPOcel cannot be used on the face or neck, it’s specifically designed to tackle stubborn areas of the body such as the stomach, thighs, arms, bra rolls, and love handles, which are areas of the body that most people experience a build up of stubborn fat and are unable to shift through diet and exercise alone.
  • Fat Reduction + Skin Tightening: The Primary goal of LIPOcel is permanent and targeted fat reduction, with secondary skin tightening benefits, making it a true 2 in 1 solution delivering outstanding results for non-surgical body contouring.
  • High Energy Output: Delivers up to 150 joules per shot — significantly more than standard HIFU (0.3–1.5 joules).
  • Patented Contact Cooling: Enhances safety and comfort during treatment, utilising a specially designed handpiece.
  • Efficient Delivery: Releases 16  lines of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound energy per shot via the handpiece, compared to only 1 single line of HIFU energy that is emitted via traditional HIFU devices, meaning we can cover larger areas of the body, and achieve more dramatic results,  faster.
  • Customisable Depth: Treats at 8mm and 13mm for precise fat targeting compared to a maximum depth of 4.5mm of standard HIFU devices.
  • TGA Certified: Clinical studies support LIPOcel in being a safe, effective non-surgical body sculpting treatment.

Key Benefits of  HIFU Skin Tightening

  • Targeted Skin Lifting: Reaches the same layer targeted in surgical facelifts — the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS)
  • Collagen Boosting: Stimulates collagen and elastin in the epidermis and dermis.
  • Best for Skin Laxity: Ideal for post-pregnancy, post-weight loss, and age-related skin concerns.
  • Precision Control: Treats depths between 1.5mm and 4.5mm to tighten without fat reduction.
  • Face & Neck Friendly: Perfect for delicate zones like the jawline, cheeks, and under-eye area.

Who Is Each Treatment For?

LIPOcel is ideal if you:

  • Want visible fat reduction without surgery
  • Have localised fat on your stomach, thighs, arms, bra rolls, upper back and love handles
  • Also want to improve mild to moderate skin laxity in the same session
  • Want a tailored treatment, customised to your unique concerns and goals
  • You are after a faster, high-performance body sculpting treatment

HIFU is best if you:

  • Are concerned with predominantly skin tightening  (minimal to no fat to lose)
  • Have sagging, crepey, or loose skin from aging or weight changes
  • You are looking for facial rejuvenation or a non-surgical facelift
  • Want to lift and firm skin over time with minimal downtime

Technology Matters: Why We Use Both

At Elite Body Contouring, we only use TGA-certified medical-grade technology to ensure the best outcomes for our clients. While both LIPOcel and HIFU are highly effective and non-invasive, each serves a distinct purpose:

  • LIPOcel targets deeper fat layers with higher energy, making it ideal for body reshaping.
  • HIFU targets shallower layers to stimulate collagen and firm the skin; traditional HIFU devices take into consideration their use on the face and neck.
